Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation was started in 2003, followed by GK Enchanted Farm in 2010. These institutions work together with the goal of ending poverty. The farm was founded by Tito Tony Meloto to address deep poverty, initially through camps and trainings that helped individuals leave behind a life of violence. They later started building peaceful communities, now totaling over 2500 across the Philippines, with the dream of ending poverty for 5 million families.
In 2014, GK Enchanted Farm aimed to build a movement of social entrepreneurs, creating businesses that help the poor. These entrepreneurs, often from impoverished backgrounds, can now directly sell their produce without middlemen. The farm hosts SEED Philippines, the first farm village university globally, providing experiential and entrepreneurial education. Graduates, like Hiram, from challenging backgrounds, are now successful entrepreneurs, contributing to the local economy and becoming significant taxpayers.
The farm's initiatives have created jobs, ensuring children in the community attend school, with many becoming honor students. They have also established hospitals and clinics, providing access to healthcare. The farm has become a thriving community where individuals can live with dignity and opportunities.
Initially, the farm managed transactions manually, which became challenging with growth. In 2014, they struggled to keep up with operations, doing things manually and dealing with multiple file versions. Recognizing the need to bridge technology with agriculture, they encountered Oracle NetSuite Social Impact. A grant from NetSuite significantly reduced administrative time, allowing them to focus on their mission of ending poverty for 5 million Filipinos and building 500,000 social enterprises quickly. NetSuite's flexibility allows for customization of forms and reports without external consultants, and workflow automation has streamlined processes, especially tax reporting.
One of the social enterprises is a plush toy making company, Human Nature Incorporated. This initiative employs mothers from slums who previously worked in garment factories that closed down. By utilizing their sewing skills, they create products sold to customers, with toys also donated to children in communities. What started with 3-4 products has grown to 95 SKUs, making inventory management challenging. To support this growth, they adopted Oracle NetSuite, recognizing the need for proper tools. The goal is to build a network of enterprises using the same system for easier transactions, shared learning, and better operational tracking, even training mothers to use the system.
The dream has evolved into a massive movement, exceeding initial expectations due to engagement with people worldwide and a willingness to learn from mistakes. They have built over 2,500 communities, helped over a million people, feed 80,000 children daily, and established 60 social enterprises creating over 300 jobs. The partnership with NetSuite has reminded their team to focus not only on operations and numbers but also on their true bottom line: social and environmental impact.
