Two BFFs reborn queen & empress dowager—sent to corrupt villains, fell in love, saved them! #system
Summary
Highlights
Two best friends, Tan Nian and Su Chunhe, find themselves reborn into a novel after Tan Nian's death. They wake up in the bodies of the Empress and Empress Dowager, respectively. A mysterious 'Villainess Enters Fiction' system informs them they must, within three months, turn the story's two major villains—the Regent, Xiao Chenyuan, and the head eunuch (Jinyiwei Commander), Qiu Jianqing—into truly evil characters. Their reward for success is fifty million dollars and a modern rebirth, while failure means dire consequences.
The BFFs quickly realize they've swapped into a complex plot. Su Chunhe (as the Empress Dowager) initially slaps the Emperor by mistake, thinking he's a villain. They then identify the true villains as the Regent, Xiao Chenyuan, and the Jinyiwei Commander, Qiu Jianqing, but are surprised by their seemingly noble actions. The system continuously pushes them to provoke and torment these men, promising rewards for each act of humiliation.
Su Chunhe is pressured by the system to 'sleep' with Qiu Jianqing to earn money and save Tan Nian. During this, new backstory emerges: Qiu Jianqing was tasked to protect Su Chunhe's character by her late father. Meanwhile, Tan Nian (as the Empress) is tasked to equally humiliate Xiao Chenyuan. The BFFs are confused by the villains' unexpected kindness and reluctance to retaliate, making them question the system's labels.
Despite their efforts to humiliate the villains, the system deems their actions insufficient and triggers a new, darker plotline. A severe drought hits, and the villains are put in charge of refugee relief. The BFFs are ordered to poison the relief food and frame the villains, threatening them with assisted euthanasia in modern times if they refuse. The friends are horrified by this and begin to actively question the system's morality and the true nature of the 'villains'.
The Empress and Empress Dowager investigate and discover that Qiu Jianqing and Xiao Chenyuan are not corrupt, but are actually using their power to collect funds from genuinely evil rich individuals, such as a fraudulent doctor and exploitative moneylenders, to aid the refugees. They realize the 'villains' are doing good, but their methods are misunderstood and demonized by the public due to their reputations and the Emperor's schemes.
The Emperor, attempting to frame the Regent and Commander, sets a trap involving poisoned porridge and disguised enemy soldiers (from the Cang nation). The BFFs, now allied with the 'villains,' try to expose the plot. When chaos erupts, the Regent and Commander prioritize protecting the innocent and the BFFs, revealing their true heroic nature. They lead a counter-attack against the Cang nation infiltrators, with help from the grateful citizens.
The Regent and Commander succeed in their mission, gaining the love and respect of the people. The system is frustrated, claiming the BFFs have 'lost' the villains' bad reputations. However, the friends argue that losing a bad reputation counts as losing reputation, effectively fulfilling the mission in an unexpected way. They realize the system's narrative was flawed and decide to embrace their new lives and relationships within the novel, choosing love and happiness over the system's cruel directives.
