Jiang Jinshi, a fresh graduate, finds himself transmigrated into the body of a gambler during a severe drought. He's penniless and his family is starving. A mysterious 'bandit system' activates, promising rewards for completing acts of robbery. He steals food, cures his ailing mother with a system-provided pill, and starts building his 'Sunshine Village' by recruiting the first two members, Luo Feng and his sister, Luo Jin.
Jiang Jinshi's greedy uncles and Auntie Wang Gui attempt to steal his family's last rations and even his sister. Jiang Jinshi, empowered by the system, fends them off with his new combat abilities. He then continues to recruit more villagers, including Monkey and Zhang Honghong, growing his initial bandit group. The system rewards him for reaching five members.
Jiang Jinshi's mother tries to arrange a marriage for him with Li Zhaodi, a girl known for being abused by her family. Jiang Jinshi saves Li Zhaodi from being sold and brings her to his home. She renames herself Crescent Moon. She eventually proves to be invaluable in the village.
Jiang Jinshi gathers firewood from Xiaojiang Mountain, which belongs to the influential Mr. Tang, angering him. Mr. Tang, in league with Viper Village, sends people to deal with Jiang Jinshi. Jiang Jinshi challenges Viper Village and defeats their second-in-command, gaining many of their members for Sunshine Village and establishing its dominance.
Mr. Tang, impressed by Sunshine Village's strength, attempts to form an alliance with Jiang Jinshi. Jiang Jinshi manipulates Mr. Tang with promises of power and wealth to secure resources for his village. He then uses these resources to provide food and supplies to Dajiang Village, convincing them to join Sunshine Village and rallying them against corrupt officials.
Crescent Moon is captured by her former abusive family. Jiang Jinshi rescues her, publicly proposes, and marries her, solidifying their bond and further demonstrating his commitment to protecting his people. The villagers celebrate their marriage.
Crescent Moon uses her knowledge from her previous life to create weapons for Sunshine Village. Jiang Jinshi uses system points to grant his followers special skills. He discovers that Crescent Moon is also a transmigrator from modern times, strengthening their shared mission. Nie Fengyun arrives, having wiped out other bandit villages and joining Sunshine Village to avenge his parents, who were killed by Mr. Tang Yunhe.
Jiang Jinshi plans to rob the granary in Jiangcheng to provide for the people. He uses the information from Mr. Tang's spies against him, securing access to the granary. He exposes Mr. Tang Yunhe's corruption, revealing his embezzlement of disaster relief funds and collaboration with county officials. Nie Fengyun finally avenges his parents.
Jiang Jinshi receives a 'salt refining manual' from the system. Crescent Moon uses her knowledge from her modern life to refine coarse salt into fine salt, which is crucial for the army. They travel to Leicheng to collect poisonous salt stones and encounter Wei Xikang, the Crown Prince, disguised as a scholar. Jiang Jinshi and his group learn about the internal strife in the court and the impending war.
The Crown Prince reveals his identity, and Jiang Jinshi's group realizes the dire situation the Qian Dynasty faces with the Huns invading and a looming civil war. Jiang Jinshi unites the common people and his Sunshine Village army to join the King of Zhenbei on the northern front. They successfully repel the Huns, saving the country.
After defeating the Huns, Jiang Jinshi and his army return triumphant. He declines the Crown Prince's offer to join the court, choosing to return to Sunshine Village to continue his mission of helping the people. The system then gives him a new mission: "Go south to capture the dragon."
