Vedanta states that all objects in this world are merely names and forms, projections superimposed on the non-dual reality, much like images on a cinema screen. Just as the screen remains unaffected by the film, our true self, the ultimate reality, is untouched by the images of this world. Everything is superimposed on our real nature, which is never altered.
The world appears on the screen of consciousness, but when it doesn't appear, as in deep sleep, we experience happiness because we forget this world. This happiness is inherent in forgetting, and it can be cultivated through a direct practice of detachment. A sage advises to 'put the whole world to sleep by holding onto consciousness,' meaning to detach from names and forms and let the mind awaken to its true self, leading to freedom.
The ego is identified as the main obstacle to reality, a mere habit of thought based on the false concept of a self separate from the world. It's an artificial center for imaginary emotions. Our real nature is beyond knowledge and ignorance, without name or form. Forgetting the ego, body, and mind can happen in an instant, like a dream vanishing upon waking. Any persistent thought should be dismissed, and one should dive deep within until disappearing, which means forgetting everything in this world.
Simplicity is key, but people resist forgetting the world because they perceive it as real. Understanding that the world is an illusion leads to natural detachment (vairagya), a turning inward towards the source of consciousness. When you truly grasp that all external things are nothing, detachment arises effortlessly. This conviction allows you to remain indifferent to all things, undisturbed, realizing that the world, with its temporary objects, is an illusion of names and forms, a projection of your own mind.
Anything that appears and does not last cannot be real, such as constantly changing thoughts, body, mind, ignorance, and knowledge. Reality, however, is unchanging and eternal, and that is what you are. You are not your body, name, mind, or anything that can change. A firm conviction in this truth, through deep reflection, will prove what is real and what is not. Past experiences, joys, and sorrows all disappear as if they never existed, just as current experiences vanish almost instantly.
Upon death, all life's experiences, worries, and pleasures will reduce to nothing, as if they were a dream. Indeed, this entire world is a long dream; everything seen and perceived is a dream. Accepting this perspective is the path to freedom. Nothing in this world is real; only you are reality. Deeply understanding that the world is a dream allows it to be as it is, without trying to destroy it, merely knowing it's an illusion. Complete forgetting of this illusion means realizing that nothing truly exists.
While living in this world, accept everything with love and gratitude, not just the good. Do not fight what comes, as this helps dissolve the ego. The practice is to maintain the understanding that everything is an illusion. Fulfill obligations but remain detached, realizing that whatever is felt or perceived is an illusion that does not exist. Even immersed in illusions, remember you are the immutable reality, like a lotus leaf untouched by mud. Value only the immutable, the profound background upon which all experiences appear and disappear, which remains immaculate.
Comparing oneself to a wave, believing oneself to be a separate individual, leads to living superficially, losing touch with the true reality of being the entire ocean. Ignorant minds cling to the idea of separation from God, the universal consciousness. This illusion perpetuates thoughts that distract from reality. True happiness lies in forgetting all things and understanding that your role in this world is an illusion. Firmly believing in non-duality and seeing the world as a dream brings perfect mental peace. Ultimate reality is non-dual unity, where no intentions or perceptions arise, as there is only one, the absolute consciousness, which cannot be perceived as an object. Forget everything, and you are already there.
