Highlights
The story introduces Tang Sanzang, a Buddhist monk, tasked by the Goddess of Mercy to journey west to obtain Buddhist scriptures. He encounters the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, who has been imprisoned for 500 years. After being freed, Wukong initially resists accompanying Sanzang but is bound by a magical headband that causes him pain when Sanzang chants a specific mantra. Wukong is joined by two other disciples, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, and they begin their perilous journey.
The group enters a strange, foggy village where they encounter a woman who appears to be an innocent villager. Wukong, with his 'Fiery Eyes and Golden Gaze,' can see through disguises and recognizes her as a demon. Sanzang, unable to see the demon's true form, is misled by the illusion. This deception leads to tension and distrust between Sanzang and Wukong, as the monk scolds Wukong for attacking what he perceives as innocent humans.
The travelers arrive in a kingdom plagued by a demon king who has been abducting children to consume their blood for power. Wukong, determined to help, goes to investigate. The White Bone Demoness, disguised as the queen, manipulates the situation to further cause discord between Sanzang and Wukong. She tries to lure Sanzang into her trap, promising to aid him while secretly plotting to devour him.
Wukong confronts the White Bone Demoness multiple times. Each time, he sees her true demonic form, but Sanzang only sees her human disguises, including an old woman and a young girl. Fuelled by misinformation and his master's unwavering belief in the good in all beings, Sanzang becomes increasingly frustrated with Wukong's violent actions. Despite Wukong's attempts to prove her demonic nature, Sanzang, believing Wukong is indiscriminately killing innocents, expels him from the group.
After Wukong leaves, Sanzang and the other disciples find themselves vulnerable. Sanzang is easily captured by the White Bone Demoness, who intends to consume him. Bajie and Wujing, realizing their predicament and Wukong's importance, seek him out to ask for his help. They find him with the Goddess of Mercy, who advises Wukong to set aside his pride and rescue his master, reminding him of his commitment to the journey.
Wukong returns and confronts the White Bone Demoness in a climactic battle. He eventually defeats her, but her spirit is not destroyed. The Goddess of Mercy appears and explains that for the demon to truly find peace and be reborn, Wukong must make a great sacrifice. Sanzang, understanding the deeper meaning of compassion and redemption, offers his own life to facilitate the demon's rebirth, believing that every being deserves a chance at a better path. Wukong, though torn, fulfills his master's wish.
Sanzang temporarily dies to allow the White Bone Demoness's spirit to be reborn. Wukong, along with Bajie and Wujing, guards his master's body. After a period, Sanzang is resurrected, and the White Bone Demoness is seen reborn as a new, pure being. The group, now with a deeper understanding of their mission and each other, continues their journey to the west, having learned valuable lessons about faith, sacrifice, and the complexities of good and evil.
