Madera Community College Suspends Professor Over Candy Bar Distribution

During an April 29 open house, Professor David Richardson distributed 'Jeremy's Chocolate' bars, which featured satirical labels regarding gender pronouns. The candy was marketed by Jeremy's Razors as a critique of modern gender ideology. After a confrontation with a colleague, Richardson was served with a formal suspension by a uniformed police officer without prior notification from the college.

The college suspended Richardson and banned him from campus, citing a potential 'hostile work environment based on gender.' The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) intervened, asserting that the distribution of the candy is protected speech under the First Amendment. FIRE argues that public institutions cannot legally punish faculty for expressing views simply because others find them offensive or controversial.
