The Impact of Contextualized Instructional Materials on Student Engagement and Learning

Contextualized teaching materials are essential for effective teaching, with teachers being the most suitable authors due to their ability to curate appropriate resources. Creating these materials encourages teacher promotion, boosts enthusiasm for digital classroom approaches, and fosters professionalism and organizational satisfaction. Technology facilitates the mastery of crucial educational skills through such materials.

Teachers face significant challenges in preparing instructional materials, including aligning objects and instructions with actual use, the substantial time commitment required, and ensuring the effectiveness of these materials in promoting student learning readiness.

Research indicates that instructional materials, especially CIMs, positively impact student learning. Contextualization directly develops skills and knowledge for specific situations by localizing tasks, instructions, and utilizing indigenous materials. This approach motivates students, promotes indigenization by using community resources, and addresses affordability concerns for teaching materials.

Using CIMs significantly increases motivation among Grade 7 students learning Philippine literature. Students showed higher motivation than a control group, expressing enjoyment in their teacher's narration, activities, the subject itself, reading stories, and finding the materials engaging and the discussions interesting. CIMs even motivated previously uninterested students.

While CIMs highly boosted student motivation, their contribution to cognitive achievement in Grade 7 Philippine literature was observed only at the application level. The control group, without CIMs, still showed improved scores in remembering, understanding, and applying various concepts.
