Catholic University Investigates Student for Satirical Memes

CUA launched an investigation into student Rory O'Connor for 'disorderly conduct' after he posted memes on Instagram criticizing the university's Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) chapter. The investigation was triggered by a complaint from YAF regarding a meme featuring characters from the cartoon 'Arthur'.

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) intervened, arguing that the university's investigation violates its own promises of free expression. FIRE asserts that the memes constitute protected political satire and do not meet the legal threshold for harassment or true threats, as they were not serious expressions of intent to commit violence.

FIRE highlighted that even without formal punishment, the investigation itself creates a 'chilling effect' on campus speech. By subjecting a student to disciplinary processes for protected expression, CUA contradicts its own stated values and previous claims of an anti-cancellation policy, and is urged to immediately drop the investigation.
