Vincent Harper, a Korean War veteran, runs a deli near Wall Street where his background in intelligence allows him to notice a suspicious pattern: two men using his shop for a 'dead drop' system using sandwich wrappers to pass encrypted messages.
Vincent contacts his former commanding officer, leading to a meeting with FBI counterintelligence agent Sarah Drummond. They agree to a dangerous operation where Vincent will photograph the messages and replace them with FBI disinformation.
Through meticulous teamwork, Vincent and the FBI identify the courier, Victor Petrov, and eventually the source of the stolen intelligence: a Defense Intelligence Agency analyst named Douglas Marsh who was compromised by gambling debts.
In November 1962, the FBI arrests members of the spy ring. Vincent continues his quiet life, his secret role remaining classified for decades until the archives were finally opened to the public in 2008.
