Located in the heart of Luzon, Mount Makiling is shrouded in mystery and magic. This is the story of Maria Makiling, a beautiful and kind goddess who often appeared to people as an ordinary human.
Maria Makiling genuinely cared for the people, healing the sick, guiding the lost, and ensuring bountiful harvests. Beyond her protective nature, she also wove magical fabrics and created beautiful items, occasionally gifted to the villagers.
Maria attracted three distinct suitors: Kapitan Lara, a Spanish soldier; Joselito, a mestizo student; and Juan, a simple farmer. They each presented their affections and interests to her.
After much anticipation, Maria announced her choice on the night of the full moon, selecting Juan due to his love for the land and its creatures, surprising everyone, especially the other suitors who grew angry.
However, their happiness was short-lived. A fire at the Spanish quarters led to a great injustice. Juan was wrongly accused by Kapitan Lara and Joselito, pressured to testify against him. Juan was executed by a firing squad.
Maria arrived just moments too late, embracing Juan's lifeless body, her cries echoing through the plaza. Standing atop the mountain, distraught, Maria cursed those who could not accept defeat in love, ensuring that the land would never forget the injustice.
Maria Makiling was never seen again after that day. Her legend, however, lives on in the heart of the mountain, a reminder of the power of love and the consequences of betrayal.
