The Holy Spirit teaches through the Bible. While people wrote the Bible, God authored it. The Bible is a historical record of God's interaction with people and teaches us about God. It's important to read the Bible for revelation, not just knowledge, inviting the Holy Spirit to teach and reveal things. Questions to ask include, 'God, can you give me some clarity?' and 'What do you want me to focus on here?'
The Holy Spirit brings to remembrance the things Jesus said. People often forget, so it's important to remember God's goodness. Set aside space to reflect on how God has been good and what he's been teaching. When praying, ask the Holy Spirit to help with memories and acknowledge that God dwells within followers, giving more of your mind to God, resulting in stronger faith and peace.
The Holy Spirit gives inner peace, which can serve as guidance. However, feeling peace isn't always a guarantee of guidance from the Holy Spirit, as people can follow feelings not in line with God's will. To discern if peace is from God, stay close to God, focus on what he says and wants, and trust him. Moving to Japan required quitting a job, but after prayer, God gave peace to leave friends and family so more could know him.
The Holy Spirit gives conviction, leading people to his will. Convictions can feel negative or uneasy, such as feeling uncomfortable about certain media. Pray for God to convict you of any sin committed. Sometimes, convictions happen before sin, guiding and protecting. Be reflective and sensitive to specific convictions, but do not harbor shame after repenting.
The Holy Spirit gives specific nudges, prompting specific actions. An example is Philip being told to overtake a chariot. Another story involves Johnny, who felt nudged to pray for a priest in Nepal and delivered a message about a dream the priest had. Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's nudges and quick to obey them, even if they feel random or out of the way, as that is where God moves.
The five ways the Holy Spirit speaks are teaching, reminders, inner peace, conviction, and specific nudges. Be sensitive to what the Holy Spirit is teaching and leading you to do. Remember you have access to the Holy Spirit and he often tells you that Jesus loves you.
