The Stock Market Game has two sets of rules: National rules, which apply to all participants globally, and local rules, which are specific to regions, states, or particular competitions.
Teachers can find both national and local rules in the Teacher Support Center on www.stockmarketgame.org. Students can access these rules in their trading portfolio or by logging into www.stockmarketgame.org and navigating to 'Rules of the Game' under 'resources'.
Each portfolio begins with $100,000 in cash. Going over this amount means entering 'margin,' where you borrow money to invest. Participants should monitor their cash balance to avoid operating on margin unless instructed otherwise by their teacher.
Cash held in the portfolio earns interest. Only stocks listed on the NASDAQ and New York Stock Exchange are eligible for trading. You can check a stock's exchange on financial news sites like Yahoo Finance.
Teams are ranked after their first successful trade, encouraging early investment. It's not necessary to sell off investments before the competition ends. The start and end dates of the competition can be found in the game interface.
Only stocks trading for $3 or more are allowed, and these companies must have a market capitalization of $25 million or more. Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying outstanding shares by the price per share.
Participants must buy at least 10 shares per stock transaction.
Real-time trades during market hours (Monday-Friday, 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM EST) execute immediately. End-of-day trades during market hours price at 4:00 PM EST. Trades placed outside market hours will execute at the opening of the next business day. Transaction notes and pending orders update immediately, while account summaries and holdings update overnight.
A $5 fee is charged for every stock buy or sell transaction. Stock dividends, payments, and other corporate actions are automatically updated in the portfolio.
