Sanitation, Plumbing Design and Installation (Part 8) | Master Plumber Licensure Exam Refresher
Summary
Highlights
Aside from lavatories, bathtubs are another common fixture provided with overflow. The overflow's primary purpose is to let excess water escape to prevent flooding below the flood level rim, and it also protects against self-siphonage.
When joining two pipes of different materials that could cause corrosion, a dielectric union should be used. For bathtubs recessed into walls, they must be provided with waterproof joints. Straight tees are typically used in the vent section of the DWV (Drainage, Waste, and Vent) system. The minimum size of cast iron soil pipe manufactured for DWV systems is 51 mm. Sanitary crosses and straight crosses are not permitted in horizontal piping.
Aside from testing for leaks, a test tee can also be used as a permanent cleanout. A 6-inch CHB (Concrete Hollow Block) wall is best suited for running soil pipes. An air chamber can prevent water hammer. An aerobic treatment system is an alternative to a conventional septic tank. The minimum size for a swimming pool drain is 2 inches. A gate valve is used to shut off water flow during maintenance.
Storm sewers are usually placed near the curb. The best location for soil pipes is in a pipe chase. UPVC is ideal for sanitary pipes. Level three types of water service refer to individual house pipes in connection with the meter. Black steel pipe with galvanized malleable fitting is ideal for gas pipes. Reinforced concrete is the material used for the base of a septic tank in a digestive chamber.
