In mid-2018, 29-year-old Grant Amato was unemployed, living with his parents in Florida. He had been expelled from anesthesiology school and was previously fired for stealing medication.
Grant spent over $200,000 of his family’s money on a Bulgarian cam model named Sylvie, draining his father's life savings and accumulating debt.
After returning from rehab for his online porn addiction, Grant violated family conditions by contacting Sylvie again, leading to his father kicking him out.
The next morning, police discovered Grant's parents and brother dead in their home with gunshot wounds. Grant was the prime suspect due to his recent confrontation with his father.
In police custody, Grant was interviewed but maintained his innocence. He was unaware of being suspected of his family's murder and seemed detached.
Detectives tried to elicit a confession using various techniques, including offering Grant justifications for his actions, but he repeatedly denied involvement.
Grant was arrested later that day and his trial began in August 2019. Evidence showed he continued contacting Sylvie after the murders, and he was sentenced to life without parole.
