The teacher, returning home late, overhears a heated conversation between a man and a woman in the forest. The woman's voice is angry, asking if he plans to murder them. The man's voice is deep and musical, threatening repercussions if she tries to change things. The teacher observes them, seeing the woman kneel as if begging, and becomes uneasy before they disappear.

The next morning, the teacher sees two young sisters, Pauline and Eva Maynard, who are staying at the boarding house. The teacher recognizes Eva's voice from the forest. Later, the teacher hears the mysterious man, who is a talented singer, practicing in the garden. The landlady reveals that the sisters' guardian is Richard Benning, who cares for them and manages their inheritance set to be released when they turn 21. Eva is also unwell, and Brownville's air is supposed to help her.

A tragedy strikes the town when Pauline Maynard dies. During the wake, Eva confronts Richard Benning, accusing him of causing her sister's death. Benning calms Eva with a strange gesture, causing her eyes to close and making her still. An inquest attributes Pauline's death to heart disease, but many in Brownville find it odd that neither Benning nor Eva attend the funeral.

One evening, the teacher witnesses an intimate moment between Benning and Eva, who appear to be lovers. Eva pleads with Benning, stating she knows he killed Pauline and asking him to kill her quickly. Benning walks away singing. The teacher, deeply concerned, confronts Eva, who initially denies needing help but then expresses her love for Benning and warns the teacher not to interfere, threatening to lie if the teacher speaks to the police.

The teacher, enamored with Eva, agrees to meet her for a walk. They go to an old mill and then to Eagle's Nest, a cliff high above the forest. Richard Benning suddenly appears. Eva stands on the cliff's edge, expressing love for Benning, but her face also shows fear. With a smile and fear in her eyes, Eva steps backward and falls off the cliff to her death.

Benning and the teacher race to the bottom of the cliff. Benning confirms Eva is dead and asks the teacher to stay with the body while he fetches a police officer. As he leaves, Benning casually states that Eva's death was an accident and that she killed herself. The teacher, however, calls Benning a 'damned killer', convinced he is responsible, even though he didn't touch her. Benning walks away singing an opera song.
