Summary
Highlights
Lightning McQueen and Cruz Ramirez are on Fireball Beach for training. McQueen is resistant to Cruz's modern training methods, especially a treadmill. He wants to race "real racing" on the sand. Cruz struggles to track his speed in the sand, while McQueen faces challenges with traction and hitting crabs. He eventually achieves 198 mph but feels it's still not fast enough compared to Storm.
McQueen decides to go to Thunder Hollow, a dirt track, to race. He encounters Jackson Storm, a cocky new generation racer who subtly insults McQueen's age. Storm showcases his superior speed and efficiency, attributed to advanced simulator training and aerodynamic design, winning multiple races.
During a race, McQueen tries to keep up with Jackson Storm. His pit stop crew works hard to get him back on the track quickly, but Storm maintains his lead. McQueen struggles, fading behind Storm, leading to concerns about his future in racing.
McQueen attends an event where he meets Sterling, who questions his place in racing. Storm further humiliates McQueen by suggesting he's old and broken down, making a joke about him selling mud flaps. Sterling later reveals his plan for Cruz to become a brand in racing, emphasizing legacy and the financial implications of losing.
Despite the setbacks and nearing the end of his career, McQueen is determined not to give up. Cruz tells him not to fear failure but to be afraid of not having the chance. She motivates him by reminding him of his past fearlessness and the opportunity he has to prove himself against Storm.
