The droids crash-landed on Tatooine, were captured by Jawas, and sold to Owen Lars and Luke Skywalker. R2-D2, driven by Leia's mission, sought Obi-Wan Kenobi, leading to Luke joining the cause. R2 aided Luke in piloting his X-Wing during the destruction of the first Death Star, taking heavy damage but being fully repaired.
R2-D2, an astromech droid on Queen Padmé Amidala's ship, proved his resourcefulness by repairing the ship and earning the Queen's gratitude. C-3PO, a protocol droid, was built by a young Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine from spare parts. The droids were separated when Anakin left Tatooine, but reunited later when Anakin, Padmé, and R2 returned to the planet.
During the Clone Wars, R2-D2 often accompanied Anakin Skywalker, while C-3PO served Padmé Amidala. They had various adventures together, including a mission to Cato Neimoidia to expose a spy and a relief effort on Aleen where they stopped quakes. They also encountered miniature inhabitants and a holographic dictator, showcasing their unexpected heroics.
As the Clone Wars neared its end, R2-D2 remained with Anakin, even on Mustafar during his turn to the dark side. C-3PO piloted Padmé's ship to Mustafar. After Padmé's death and the hiding of her children, Luke and Leia, Bail Organa had C-3PO's memory wiped to protect the secrets of the Skywalker twins, while R2-D2 retained his memories.
At both the Hoth base and on Bespin's Cloud City, the droids continued to assist the Rebel heroes. C-3PO was famously disassembled by Stormtroopers but later reassembled by Chewbacca and R2-D2. R2 accompanied Luke to Dagobah for Jedi training with Yoda, providing support and eventually helping to convince Luke to return to training later on Ahch-To.
C-3PO and R2-D2 played key roles in the rescue of Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt. R2 secretly carried Luke's lightsaber, essential for the escape. Later, on Endor, C-3PO was mistaken for a god by the Ewoks, a circumstance that, with Luke's help, secured the Ewoks' alliance with the Rebels against the Empire.
Post-Empire, C-3PO remained with Leia as she fought Imperial holdouts and later led the Resistance against the First Order. R2-D2 stayed with Luke during his attempt to train a new generation of Jedi, eventually entering a low-power mode after Ben Solo's betrayal. C-3PO had his memory wiped again to translate Sith runes, a sacrifice he willingly made for the mission.
R2-D2 was reactivated by Rey, revealing the rest of the map to Luke. He then accompanied Rey to find Luke on Ahch-To. Later, R2-D2 restored C-3PO's memory after his wipe, ensuring the duo's partnership continued. Together, they witnessed the final defeat of Palpatine and the First Order, having been present for both the rise and fall of galactic empires.
C-3PO and R2-D2 served Captain Antilles on the Tantive IV, participating in covert missions for the burgeoning Rebel Alliance. They were present leading up to the Battle of Scarif, where the Death Star plans were acquired. Princess Leia hid these plans in R2's memory banks, making the droids crucial to the Rebellion.
