How to Cut Rope in an Emergency

This video demonstrates a technique to cut string or rope when scissors or a knife are not available. The example string is thick and too strong to break by hand.

To cut the rope, first measure and mark the desired length. Clamp the rope with your feet, positioning the cut mark at the top. Put the other end of the string underneath and, with an upward pull, use a sawing motion with the string to cut through. This method works quickly.

The technique is effective on thick nylon rope. If the ends unravel, they can be twisted back together. Surprisingly, even a thin piece of cotton string can be used to cut thick nylon rope.
