Computer Basics: What is a Computer?

A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information or data, which it sees as 1s and 0s, combining them to create complex things like photos, movies, and websites. It functions using both hardware, which are the physical parts, and software, which is the set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do.

When people refer to 'computer,' they usually mean a personal computer, which can be a desktop or a laptop. These come in two main styles: PCs, made by various companies and typically running Microsoft Windows, and Macs, exclusively made by Apple and running Mac OS X.

Beyond personal computers, many other devices like mobile phones, tablets, game consoles, and even TVs contain built-in computers. Servers are another crucial type of computer designed to provide information to other computers on a network, playing a vital role in internet access and file sharing in offices.
