Project Overview and Technology

Between December 2024 and April 2025, Greater Anglia conducted safety assessments on 47 stations in East Anglia. The project utilized non-invasive technology, including drones for high-roof inspections and 3D digital modeling, to identify 'hidden critical elements'—structural components in roofs, walls, and supports—without the need for disruptive scaffolding.

Safety and Maintenance Strategy

The project employed a 'triage' system to prioritize repairs, focusing on proactive maintenance of structures, some over 100 years old. By identifying minor structural issues early, the team can prevent larger, more dangerous problems, ultimately extending the service life of the stations and optimizing long-term infrastructure investment.

Operational Challenges and Engineering Expertise

Conducting surveys on a live railway required precise coordination to avoid disrupting passengers. The engineering team combined structural, geotechnical, and digital expertise (BIM) to manage the surveys efficiently. The resulting 3D models serve as a digital archive that will streamline future maintenance and inspections.
