Project IBOOK is an action research initiative aimed at enhancing reading comprehension among Grade VI pupils at Pandanon Silos Elementary School in Murcia, Philippines. The project, conducted from September 2023 to February 2024, involved 15 students who were struggling with reading. It utilized illustrated books to provide visual aids, making the content more accessible and engaging. Pre- and post-assessments were used to measure the effectiveness of the intervention.
The study revealed a notable improvement in reading comprehension scores, with the mean scores shifting from 'poor' to 'outstanding' after the implementation of Project IBOOK. Qualitative data, including observations and interviews, indicated that students enjoyed reading more, gained confidence, and showed improved word recognition, comprehension, and story recall. The visual elements in the illustrated books were particularly effective in helping students contextualize and understand the stories.
The research concludes that illustrated books are a highly effective tool for supporting struggling readers, making reading materials more engaging and comprehensible. The study recommends expanding Project IBOOK to other schools and providing training for teachers to develop similar instructional resources. This approach aligns with national literacy goals and offers a practical method for strengthening reading skills across various educational settings.
