How It Works

1

Upload a .docx File

Drop a Word document saved as .docx, up to 100 MB — a report, an essay, meeting minutes or a draft contract.

2

Shorty Reads the Paragraphs

Press Summarize: Shorty takes the text of the document's paragraphs, and the AI picks out the main points and how they connect.

3

Get a Structured Summary

Usually within seconds, View Summary opens a title, an overview and the key points under titled sections.

Why Use Shorty to Summarize Word Documents?

Up to 100 MB per Document

Documents saved in the .docx format are accepted, on the free plan and every paid plan alike.

Key Points, Not a Shorter Draft

Shorty returns the document's main points under titled sections instead of a trimmed copy of its text.

No Sign-Up to Try

Upload a document and read its summary with no account and no credit card; the summary stays out of search engines.

What the Word Summarizer Reads and Returns

Documents it can read

Word documents saved in the .docx format, up to 100 MB per file on every plan: reports, essays, theses, meeting minutes, proposals and contracts. A document exported as .docx from Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages is the same format.

Older .doc files from Word 97–2003 use a different, binary format that Shorty cannot open, so the page turns one away as soon as you drop it. Open the file in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, and upload that copy.

What it reads, and what it skips

Shorty reads the document's body paragraphs, headings included, in the order they appear. Text inside tables is not read, and neither are headers, footers, footnotes or text boxes.

So a document that keeps its key figures in a table is summarized without them. If a table matters, copy its contents into the Text Summarizer. A document with almost no body text — all tables or images — is refused with a message rather than summarized.

Long documents

The text is capped before it reaches the AI, so a very long manuscript is summarized from its opening part. Split a book-length document into chapters and summarize each one on its own.

What comes back

A title, a short overview and titled sections covering the main points. A Word file has no fixed pages, so the page label on each section is the AI's rough estimate of where that point sits in the document.

Summaries of uploaded files are written in English. Uploaded documents are treated as private, so their summaries are kept out of search engines, and signing in keeps them in a searchable history.

Example output format — an illustration for a 12-page project proposal, not a real summary

Proposal: Moving Customer Support to a Shared Inbox

The support team asks to replace personal mailboxes with one shared inbox, to stop lost tickets and make response times visible.

  1. Page 1The problem today

Customer emails land in whichever agent was copied, so tickets go unanswered when that person is away.

  2. Page 4What a shared inbox changes

Every ticket gets an owner and a status, and a manager can see what is waiting and for how long.

  3. Page 8Rollout in three stages

Start with one product line, move the rest after a month, and retire personal forwarding rules last.

  4. Page 11What the team is asking for

Approval for the tool, a week of training time, and one person to own the setup.

Shorty reads the paragraphs of a Word document — a report, an essay, meeting minutes or a draft contract — and summarizes them into a title, an overview and titled sections, usually in seconds. Documents saved as .docx up to 100 MB, free with no account needed.

Frequently asked questions

Which Word formats can Shorty summarize?
Shorty's Word Summarizer takes DOCX files of up to 100 MB each. An older .doc file cannot be read, so save it as .docx first. Shorty returns a structured summary of the document's contents; the original file is never altered.
Does Shorty read tables, headers and footnotes in a Word document?
No. Shorty's Word Summarizer reads the document's body paragraphs, headings included, in the order they appear. Text inside tables, headers, footers, footnotes and text boxes is skipped, so paste a table that matters into Shorty's Text Summarizer instead.
Do I need an account to summarize Word documents?
No. Shorty summarizes Word documents without an account and without a credit card. Signing in only adds a saved, searchable history of everything you have summarized.
Is Shorty free to use?
Yes. Shorty is free to use and does not require an account for the summarizer tools — paste or upload something and read the result. A free Shorty account keeps your history in a searchable library, and paid Premium and Pro plans raise the size and volume limits.
Does a failed job still use up my quota?
No. A Shorty job that ends in an error or is cancelled never counts against a quota — the usage is refunded automatically, so a failure costs nothing.
What language is the summary written in?
Shorty's Audio, PDF and Word Summarizers write every summary in English. Shorty's YouTube, Webpage, Article and Text Summarizers let you pick the summary language from a menu of 113 languages before you start.
Does Shorty have an API?
Yes. Shorty has a public REST API at https://aishorty.com/v1, an official TypeScript SDK (@aishorty/sdk), and an OAuth 2.1 MCP server at https://aishorty.com/api/mcp that lets Claude and other AI assistants summarize, transcribe and search on your behalf.
